Quick Summary

“Short-termism” in how we manage our money, our capital markets, and social policy holds long-term consequences for the viability of the Canadian economy and for the next generation of Canadians. Jonathan Wellum offered his insightful analysis of “short-termism” and the serious problems this approach leads to in each sphere of life. Wellum proposed an alternative to current trends that will lead to growth and human flourishing over the long term.

Details

In our materialistic culture, we’re tempted to view everything as a commodity to be priced and traded, including life itself. Tragically, we have lost sight of real wealth, which cannot be captured and manipulated by accounting methodologies. We have undervalued, and even sabotaged, the metaphysical component of wealth: our ideas, creativity, innovations, faith in the future and, most importantly, our values. It is these that anchor sustained wealth and a strong economy.

Jonathan Wellum will lead research projects focused on current trends in capital markets, their organization, and their cultural significance. He brings to Cardus both a wide knowledge of the North American financial industry, and an intentional commitment to understanding markets alongside the values that drive them.
